The following is an overview of the “Forming Trusted Leaders” ENDOW F-TECC reception on May 14 at GR First UMC hosted by Bishop David Bard and GR DS Bill Haggard.
Gratitude for the support that they received after their call to ministry was a theme at the Endowment Fund for Theological Education in the Central Conferences reception last week. After a warm welcome by Rev. Bill Haggard, Bishop Bard shared about his theological training and how awed he was by the many people who supported him both spiritually and financially along the way. Others echoed this sentiment during an inspiring and informative evening.
Rev. Mary Ivanov explained the concern her parents expressed when she shared her call to ministry – and how the generosity of others made it possible for her. Rev. Mark Miller offered that, in comparison, we are spoiled in the U.S. with the opportunities for theological education, and encouraged us to think about the Endowment Fund as a legacy for the global body of Christ. Rev. Dean Prentiss shared that the support he received helped him understand that his call was being heard. And Rev. Brad Kalajainen shared the story of how Cornerstone UMC was started though the support of a generous donor. He also announced a gift of $25,000 from Cornerstone UMC.
The generosity of others will enable our brothers and sisters who are called to ministry in areas outside the United States to receive the training they need and desire. As Bishop Bard shared at the end of the evening, this is an opportunity to help pastors be their best.
We need everyone to be aware of this important ministry, and support it if able.
